Battle for the Belt FAQ

What is Battle for the Belt?

Battle for the Belt is Neon Mermaid Comics' recurring competitive Commander tournament series. Players compete in monthly qualifying events, earn Championship Tide Points based on their final placement, and work toward qualifying for the quarterly Neon Mermaid Championship.

How much does it cost to enter?

Each qualifying event has a $20 entry fee.

Do I have to be a member of the Neon Mermaid Discord?

Yes. Players must be members of the official Neon Mermaid Comics Discord server to participate in Battle for the Belt events. Discord is used for event communication, registration, announcements, and standings.

How many players can participate?

Each qualifying event has a maximum capacity of 16 players.

What format is Battle for the Belt?

Battle for the Belt is multiplayer Commander using Bracket 3 decks.

  • Maximum of 3 Game Changer cards
  • No proxies
  • Current Wizards of the Coast Commander rules and ban list apply
  • A legal decklist must be submitted at least 24 hours before the event

How does a qualifying event work?

Qualifiers use Swiss-style multiplayer Commander rounds followed by a Top 4 Final Pod. Round 1 pods are randomly assigned. Later pod assignments are based on tournament performance while making reasonable efforts to avoid repeat opponents and distribute three-player pods fairly.

How long are the rounds?

Swiss rounds are 60 minutes. When time is called, the active player finishes their current turn, and each remaining player receives one additional turn. The game then ends.

How are Tide Points awarded?

  • 1st Place — 10 points
  • 2nd Place — 7 points
  • 3rd Place — 5 points
  • 4th Place — 3 points
  • 5th Place and lower — 1 point

Tide Points accumulate throughout the quarterly season.

How do I qualify for the Championship?

At the end of the quarterly season, the eight players with the highest Championship Tide Point totals qualify for the Neon Mermaid Championship. If a qualified player cannot attend, their invitation passes to the next highest-ranked eligible player.

What happens if players are tied in points?

Season-ending ties are resolved using the following tiebreakers:

  1. Number of Qualifier Wins
  2. Number of Top 4 Finishes
  3. Total Match Wins
  4. Random determination, if necessary

Are intentional draws allowed?

No. Intentional draws or agreements to manipulate tournament standings are not permitted. A natural draw caused by the game rules or the expiration of a round is allowed.

What do I win at a monthly qualifier?

Monthly qualifier prize support includes one Play Booster per participant and prizes for the Top 4:

  • 1st — $40 Neon Mermaid gift card
  • 2nd — $25 Neon Mermaid gift card
  • 3rd — $20 Neon Mermaid gift card
  • 4th — $15 Neon Mermaid gift card

The Championship Belt remains at Neon Mermaid Comics.

What happens if I cheat or behave badly?

Players are expected to play honestly, follow the rules, respect opponents and staff, and avoid harassment, threats, discrimination, cheating, collusion, or disruptive behavior. Neon Mermaid may disqualify or remove a player for violating the event rules or disrupting the event. Disqualified players may forfeit points, prizes, and/or Championship qualification.
